What are the basics of computer security?Computer security doesn't mean hack-proof. It means hack-resistant. LUMO adopts a layered approach to computer security. Layer-1 is antivirus. LUMO employs an intelligent antivirus that is always updated. You won't have to worry whether or not your antivirus is up-to-date, because its always up to date. Layer-2 is firewall protection. Firewalls inspect network traffic, identify anything suspicious, and block what it considers threatening. Firewalls can also block specific types of traffic attempting to enter or leave your network and even block traffic from specific countries. Layer-3 is a 24/7 security operations center (SOC) managed by humans who watch LUMO's customer's network and computers looking for anything suspicious. If the SOC detects that an attack is underway, they isolate the affected computer(s) and immediately contact LUMO so we can remediate the problem. The computer won't be unlocked until the issue is solved. Layer-4 is vulnerability testing. LUMO employs software and hardware technology to discover hidden vulnerabilities in our customers' network and computers. Then we fix the vulnerabilities to armor our customers against attack. Layer-5 is penetration testing. Penetration testing, also known as "White Hat Hacking" attempts to gain access through the customer's firewall and internal security. If access is gained, LUMO can fix the exact vulnerability that a typical hacker would use to infiltrate business computers. The Penetration Test report can also be used as evidence to obtain Cyber Liability Insurance -- a MUST in today's environment. Layer-6 is Employee Security Awareness Training. If an employee is tricked into giving a hacker their username and password, no amount of security will protect your business. By training employees on an ongoing basis, it helps them become aware of computer security and instead of being a liability, they become their own security. Layer-7 is managed updates. Windows and other operating systems are imperfect, which is why the manufacturers offer security patches from time to time. By managing updates, we take the responsibility of ensuring your computers' operating systems and installed software are always up to date.

What's the difference between break/fix services and managed services?Break/fix services are reactive, meaning we respond when something breaks, such as a hardware failure or network issue. Managed services, on the other hand, are proactive, focusing on preventing issues before they occur through continuous monitoring and maintenance.
-
Can LUMO support businesses with remote workers?Yes, we specialize in providing IT support for remote and hybrid work environments. We help set up secure remote access solutions, ensure your employees' devices are protected, and provide remote troubleshooting and support when needed.
-
What's the difference between a vulnerability scan and a penetration test?A vulnerability scan is an automated process that identifies known vulnerabilities in your network. A penetration test goes further by simulating real-world attacks to find weaknesses that could be exploited by hackers. Penetration testing provides a deeper understanding of your security posture.
-
How often should I update my IT systems?LUMO recommends regular updates to both hardware and software to ensure optimal performance and security. Critical security patches should be applied as soon as they are available, while hardware upgrades can be scheduled based on your business’s needs and technology lifecycle.
